You’re invited to the first Berkeley Festival of Choro on Sunday, October 13th.  In addition to a concert featuring three choro groups at the Freight in the evening, we have afternoon workshops for listening and playing. Our goal is make this an annual event  and  we hope that you will support us in this project!!

Our featured guest artist  from Sao Paulo, Brazil,  is Almir Cortes, Ph.D, guitarist, mandolinist, composer, scholar and teacher.  Almir has taught Brazilian music at Indiana University at the Jacobs School of Music and will be performing as well as teaching a workshop  https://myspace.com/almircortes

1-2:30 pm–Lecture/Listening Workshop: “Choro: Past, Present and Future” with Harvey Wainapel, clarinetist with Berkeley Choro.  Harvey has spent the better part of 11 years traveling to and living part-time in Brazil to study, perform and immerse himself in the culture of Brazilian life and music.  No playing–just bring your ears!

Choro de Ouro will play at this and lead a Roda de Choro

Please note that on October 13th the streets in downtown Berkeley will be closed to traffic due to a street festival, so plan to take BART and/or allow plenty of time for parking!
